Log: June 25, 1868.

The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing on her 8th voyage under Captain George Athearn in the South Pacific. The log entry for this day states, “First part light trades at 4 P.M Captain came from shore could not git any recruits* headed off shore middle part the same Latter part fresh trades heading in shore at 9 A.M keep off for Dommeneck** at .11 A.M light breezes”

*The life of a whaleman was no easy task, and desertion was a common occurrence once a whaleship reached a port.  If any sailor were to desert the crew, the Captain often needed to recruit replacements by seeking out local sailors or even local natives from their current location.

** Dommeneck was most likely Dominica (Hiva Oa) in the Marquesas.
