Log: July 12, 1870

The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing on her 8th voyage under Captain George Athearn in the South Pacific just west of Santiago, Chile. The log entry for this day states,”First part commences with fresh breeze from the South & clear weather at .3 P.M wore Ship to the Westerd 3 Sails in sight at 5 P.M took in sail Middle part heading in shore Latter part fresh breeze with some squalls at .4 A.M wore Ship off shore at Day light Made sail 3 Sails in sight so ends Masafura* 30.M SE”

 

*Masafura is Mas Afuera, also known as Alejandro Selkirk Island.
