Log: August 4, 1898.

The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing on her 23rd voyage off the coast of Japan.  The log entry for this day states, “Took in the head  Stard fire on Works Thiks fog   Begin with Strong breeze from S.E. Bk heading N.E. on Starb tacks under short sail  Due the day We cutting the head and begin to boillied oil  latter part thicks fog  at night We stoods on Port tacks under short sail cutting the head clear away the Decks so end.”
