Log: August 2, 1907.

The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing off the east coast of South Africa. The journal entry for the day reads: “Light breeze from N.E. fine weather. Finish repairing Waist Boat. Ship heading S.E. on port tack. 2 p.m. raised sperm whales. Lowered 3 boats. Larboard boat struck a large whale third mate got badly stove. Got the whale alongside just at sundown. Ship lay too under lower topsails for the night.”
