The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing on her 12th voyage off the coast of New Zealand. The log entry for this day states “First part weather cloudy and squall with light rain. At two PM sighted Wallis Island ahead at five PM ship within two miles of the reef wore ship heading off shore took in light sails broke out Butter and Beef Middle part light rain squalls Latter fine weather moderat breeze from about E ship working up for the passage”
