Log: May 28, 1882

The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing off the coast of Northern New Zealand on her 12^th voyage.  Captain Charles F. Keith notes in the log for this day, “Made land yesterday and came to anchor in Monganui Harbor a little after 9 in the Morning , having the wind from the N.E. with some rain  Received four letters from home. Bad news.”

It is unknown what exactly was the ‘bad news’ Captain Keith received from home but one can imagine how futile it can be leaving a life behind while at sea without means of being there for family or loved ones in possible need.
