The CHARLES W. MORGAN on her 16th voyage was still sailing off the coast of Japan and following a previous day of equipment glitches, the log for this day states, “Today the wind has been very light and baffling all day. Ship working to the S E. Saw two fin backs. Oi in Sight.* At sun set took in light. Having lost my double barrel darting gun yesterday I loaded up my other one to try it. how far it would send the Iron, and it explodes all to pieces.”
