Log: May 24, 1886

The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing in the North Atlantic returning home to New Bedford from her 12th voyage under Captain Charles F. Keith.  The log entry from this day states, “The wind today has  been quite strong . At day light carried away the Spanker gaft, broke in two peices: Took in Flying jib, foretop gallant sail & Miz top mast Stay sail. No Obs. Today*.”

*Heavy seas and cloud cover would make taking a good observation with a sextant nearly impossible.
