Log: May 24, 1886

The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing in the North Atlantic returning home to New Bedford from her 12^th voyage under Captain Charles F. Keith.  The log entry from this day states, “The wind today has  been quite strong . At day light carried away the Spanker gaft, broke in two peices: Took in Flying jib, foretop gallant sail & Miz top mast Stay sail. No Obs. Today*.”

*Heavy seas and cloud cover would make taking a good observation with a sextant nearly impossible.
