Log: June 9, 1898

The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing on her 23rd voyage off the coast of Japan.  The log entry for this day states, “Boilling Come in with fine breeze from S.W. Bk lay backs  clear away the head at 9 clocks we brace full  startd boilling oil  due all day we store down the last fair of oil  at night fine weather still boilling  so end. Lat. 37..00 N Long. 146..26 E.”

 

As you can see the language (and spelling) of the seaman (and especially the whaleman) was specific to his own purpose.
