Log: June 1, 1842

The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing in the Central Pacific near South America on her maiden voyage under Captain Thomas Norton. The log entry for this day states, “The old sow broke out between Decks and Landed 9 Pigs on Deck. Middle a sail in sight. Last part strong breezes. Heading N.Lat 2º 16, Long 120º 46.”

Whaleships occasionally carried small livestock such as pigs and chickens aboard for fresh meat to provide to the whalemen.
