May 17, 1842: CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing off the coasts of South America and Mexico, 254 days into her maiden voyage which began on September 6, 1841 under Captain Thomas Adam Norton.
2nd Mate James Osborn notes in the ship’s logbook stating, “Begins with Strong breezes from the SE. Employed breaking out between Decks. Saw a Breach kept off for it, saw nothing. Middle saw Finbacks. Last part raised a sulphor Bottom*, so ends another long Day.”
