The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing on her maiden voyage off the coast of South America.  The log entry for this day states, “Comcd with strong breezes, and Rain Squalls from the SW. Middle moderate. at 1/2 past 4 saw Whales. Lowered 3 Boats, the W Boat went on did not fasten. Last part a Laying with the Main Yard, aback. Heading NNW. so Ends. Sick of darting at Whales.*”

*Whether they were sick of catching whales already, or missing with their harpoons, there was still another 3 years to go for the Morgan’s first voyage.
