Log: June 10, 1898
The CHARLES W. MORGAN was sailing on her 23rd voyage off the coast of Japan. The log entry for this day states, “Come in with light air from S.W. Bk heading S.E. on the Starb tacks under short sail boilling due the day we Pump fresh Water & store down oil at night fine Weather still boilling so end. Lat. 36..39 N. Long. 146..44 E.”
On this particular stretch of the voyage, this is the second day in a row that the crew spent the majority of their time boiling whale blubber to extract oil. It was a foul and filthy job.
